One Heck Of A Ride
14 importantly, we spent many hours together in interesting conversation. Unfortunately, our friend Bud Dyer has passed away, but prior to his death we were able to successfully hunt Quebec-Labrador caribou together in Canada. (Bill chose an odd method to take a black bear on that trip, about which you’ll read about in this book.) Bill and Bud were interested in learning more about Safari Club International, and I filled them in the best I could. I explained the club was not just about hunting. It also was about conservation, education, hunting safety, ethics, introducing young people to the outdoors, and such. There were no chapters near their homes in California, so I invited them to attend our SCI Arizona Chapter’s functions in Tucson, which they did. There were no women in the club’s first chapters in Los Angeles and Chicago, so we were glad to welcome Dottie and Andy Oldfield, also from California. We had many other ladies join our chapter (Rena Westenburg, Lee Levitz and Peggy Vallery, to name just three), who were hunting with the best of us. The ladies of SCI eventually formed their own group within the club and called themselves “The Sables.” We are proud of them all. Their contributions to the club are enormous. I was SCI Arizona’s founding member No. 4, and both my wife Sharon and I served terms as chapter presidents. Our son, Shane, has served with the chapter for many years. I also was vice president for eleven chapters of the club’s conservation foundation fund. The last time I checked, SCI had 250 chapters around the world. Bill and Bud eventually met SCI’s founder, C.J. McElroy, and joined our chapter. Four or five years later, Bill worked with “Mac” and others to create SCI’s Central California Chapter. You will read about his dedication to the club’s values, his determination and accomplishments, and some of his most memorable hunting experiences in the chapters that follow. I am proud to call Bill Paulin my friend. He is a world-class hunter and I truly appreciate his affording me the privilege of introducing readers to his book. Respectfully, Jimmy L.
